History of the Festival

The Fort Clifton Festival began in May of 1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebration and has become an annual event, held on Mother's Day weekend. The festival is family-oriented and educational, portraying the historic significance of the fort and its importance in the Civil War to the Petersburg defense line.

Fort Clifton is located behind Tussing Elementary School at 100 Brockwell Lane and is set on 24 acres overlooking the Appomattox River.  Fort Clifton is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and was named to the National Register of Historic Places by the Virginia Research Center for Archaeology in 1981. See Fort Clifton for more details.Features Arts and crafts persons sell a variety of hand made items. Civil War relic exhibits are on display, along with re-enactors and demonstrations.  Children's rides and concessions are available each day of the festival. Local civic groups sell hot dogs, sausage and peppers, hamburgers, funnel cakes, pizza, barbecue, french fries, ice cream, baked goods, and more. Door prizes and raffles will be held each day.Admission and Parking Admission and parking are free. Free shuttle buses are provided from White Bank Park.Location
